The text is divided into two separate works. The first is a private autobiography of Theodore Agrippa d'Aubigné (1552-1630), French poet and Huguenot soldier. Aubigné wrote the text for the edification of his three children, Constant, Marie, and Louise. The present manuscript's content is connected more closely with the one belonging to Aubigné's youngest daughter, Louise. Following the preface is a short poem addressed to "Loüise d'Aubigné, Digne fille d'une tel pere." The present copy apparently was made from a transcription by Benjamin de Valois, Seigneur de Villette, the husband of Louise d'Aubigné. Following the autobiography is a treatise on Cyrus the Great. This work is unsigned and may also be by Aubigné although it does not appear among his printed Oeuvres complètes.
